The Millicent Library
Historical Research Department - Rules
of Use
contact: Debra Charpentier
Note: the archives will be closed between July 1 and July 13
- Materials in the Historical Archives have been
painstakingly arranged, preserved and indexed by paid and volunteer
staff members over the last two decades. Many items are rare or
even unique. To provide access to these materials, while assuring
their survival, it is necessary to restrict the use of them. We
believe the Millicent Library is unusual for a library of its
size in the amount of resources dedicated to the historical archives.
- The archives are open to the public only when
the archivists are on duty. Access to this area may vary according to the
staffing needs of the library. In other words since the staff of the archives may be working in another area of the library at any given time, researchers should always call ahead and speak directly to the archivist to make an appointment. Other arrangements may be made in advance.
Researchers are advised to adhere to the Standards For Using Records
Repositories and Libraries recommended by the National Genealogical
Society.
- No one is to be left unsupervised in the research
room.
- Materials in this section of the library are
unavailable for circulation-they are in many cases too fragile
even to photocopy. The Archivist will be happy to take requests
for information and research them for patrons not able to come
in during the regular hours of operation.
- No archives materials
may be taken from the library. Materials may be used by patrons
in the main part of the library after archival closing times,
but only if staffing permits retrieval. In such cases only one
archival item at a time may be used. A form of identification,
such as a driver's license, is required as a deposit while the
materials are being used and will be returned after the materials
are returned to a staff member. Brittle materials may not be photocopied.
Always check with a staff member before photocopying.
- Users of materials at the Millicent Library accept
full legal responsibility for observing the current copyright
law, as well as the laws of libel and invasion of privacy and
property rights. Please remember that unpublished and unregistered
materials are still considered to be copyrighted.
- Any questions regarding any of these rules should
be addressed to the Library Director.
