Millie's Birthday!

Join us at the Millicent Library on Saturday, January 31st to celebrate Millicent’s birthday and to help us kick off the library’s new capital campaign to install an updated and modern HVAC system in this historic and beloved building!

The Millicent Library was built in 1893 as a memorial to Henry Huttleston Rogers’ daughter Millicent Rogers who tragically passed away as a teenager. For the past 133 years, the library has provided Fairhaven residents with a vibrant community hub, bustling with activity and brimming with opportunities for learning and connection. The building alone is also a significant historical and cultural treasure within the Town and requires continuous maintenance and upkeep.

In 2022, due to an increase in heat and humidity during the summer, and the need to close the library for several days due to the library’s lack of air conditioning. The Library Trustees began working with engineers to assess the building and develop a plan to install a modern HVAC system that provides more efficient heating and cooling throughout the library. A modern heating and cooling system will better protect and preserve the library’s resources while also providing staff and patrons with a more comfortable, healthier, and safe environment.

This updated HVAC system will also provide significant benefits to the Millicent Library and to the Town of Fairhaven including financial savings on energy costs and reduced carbon emissions.

The entire project is estimated to cost approximately $1.8 million, and the library is working with the Town and State to secure funding, applying for grants, and graciously asking Fairhaven residents to donate to the capital campaign.

To kick off this campaign, the library will be hosting a birthday party for Millicent on January 31 from 11:30-2:00. The public is invited to stop by for cake and to learn more about the capital campaign.

We are so lucky to live in a Town that treasures its local library, and the staff and trustees are committed to being good stewards of the library, ensuring it remains a vibrant community hub for Fairhaven’s future generations!
